The Egyptian Mau
The Egyptian Mau is a fascinating cat, not only because of its past history, but because of its delightful personality and striking appearance.
The Name Mau derived from the Egyptian word for cat. Clearly indentified in the artwork of the Ancient Egyptians, there is a little dispute of their lineage from the African Wildcat. Spotted cats were often depicted in Ancient Egyptian wall paintings dating back over 3,000 years and many believe these to be true ancestors of the Egyptian Mau.
They were worshiped as deities, cherished as pets, protected by laws, and mummified upon death. The family of the deceased cat shaved their Eye brows as a sign of mourning.Fascinating not only because of their history, but also their personalities and striking appearance. Living Beautiful, Ancient, and very respective Relics of Egypt.
Egyptians very quickly saw the value of the Mau. They used them initially to hunt and retrieve birds. It is very common to see pictures of cats in marshes with birds in their mouths. The oldest images of cats in ancient Egypt are hieroglyphs carved on a temple wall found to the south of Cairo dated around 2200 BC.
Around 2000 BC and on, the Mau started to hold a great importance in religion and was worshiped as a god. The Mau represented almost every aspect of their life. They were represented by over twenty some gods and goddess that were catlike figures.
Many cat cults, like the cult of Bastet, appeared during this time. They continued in to the Roman occupation around 330 AD.
Egyptian Mau is an active and colorful cat of medium size, with well developed muscles and bodies. Perfect physical condition, alert appearance, and gracious temperment are all characteristics of the Egyptian Mau.
The exiled Russian princess Nathalie Troubetskoy first imported them from Egypt to Italy in 1954, then to North America in 1956. In the past, all Egyptian Maus traced their ancestry to two of the original imports from her Fatima Cattery.

The Egyptian Mau is the only natural spotted breed of domestic cat. An extremely intelligent animal, the Mau places a great importance on family, both human and their own, and is fiercely loyal in its devotion to them. They have an elegant body that is randomly spotted, banded legs and tail, expressive gooseberry green eyes, distinctive mascara lines, a worried expression on the face, and a graceful cheetah-like stride. The Mau comes in four colors; silver, bronze, smoke and black. The black Mau is not eligible for the show ring, but can be registered.
